Singer Paola Marquez from Bogota
Colombia is graduated this year from the Conservatorium of Ghent. For
years she has been working with jazz, bossanova and latin bands. Now she
decided to go back to the roots of Afro-Colombian music focusing on
cumbia and afro-colombian rhythms. The rhythm section of Maguaré
consists of traditional percussionist Fanor Blanco, Javier Cabrera and Core Pareja, playing the
tambora, tambor alegre, llamador, maracas, …Backed up by a section of five horns, double
bass, accordeon, piano and organ, Maguaré
plays a mix of Afro-Colombian beats in the sprit of Toto de La
Momposina and the '60s dancehall cumbia of Lucho Bermudez, Lito
Barrientos, ...

Maguaré is the group centered around Colombian singer Paola Marquez and
takes you to the South-American continent. Maguaré is an eleven-piece
band with three Colombian percussionists and a solid Belgian brass
section. Maguaré plays cumbia, porro, gaita and other Afro-Colombian
rhythms. They recently recorded a first demo which was well received on
BBC. Cumbia is the next big thing from the Latin American continent and
Maguaré are their ambassadors in Belgium!
